What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session

Going to therapy can be a vulnerable and anxiety producing experience. Knowing what to expect can help alleviate uncomfortable feelings and help prepare you for your initial session.

For your initial session, plan to arrive 15 to 20 minutes early to complete intake paperwork. Make sure to bring a copy of your ID and insurance card. You are welcome to bring relevant paperwork such as past psychological reports or medical records to share with your therapist.

After completing your intake paperwork, you will meet with your therapist for a diagnostic interview. During the diagnostic interview, your therapist will ask you questions about your presenting problem and develop goals for your treatment. During your intake, your therapist will ask you questions such as;

  • What brought you to therapy?

  • What are your current symptoms?

  • What are your goals for therapy?

  • Relevant history including past mental health service, family history, & medical history

At the end of your session, your therapist will summarize their initial impressions, highlight their therapeutic approach and methods they will employ, and give recommendations for frequency and length of treatment.

It is important to ask your therapist any questions you may have about the therapeutic process and what to expect from therapy. Remember that your therapist is there to help and will strive to create a therapeutic environment with compassion, empathy, and safety.
